These machines are the unsung heroes of the LNG world, playing a crucial role in the liquefaction, storage, and transportation of natural gas. Understanding LNG and the Need for Compression

Before we dive into the operating principles of LNG compressors, it’s essential to understand what LNG is and why compression is necessary. LNG, or liquefied natural gas, is natural gas that has been cooled to a very low temperature (-162°C or -260°F) to turn it into a liquid state. This process significantly reduces the volume of the natural gas, making it easier and more cost – effective to store and transport.

However, during various stages of the LNG process, from production at the liquefaction plant to distribution at the end – user site, there is a need to increase the pressure of the LNG. This is where LNG compressors come in. They are used to boost the pressure of the gas, enabling it to flow through pipelines, be loaded onto tankers, or be used in various industrial applications.

Types of LNG Compressors and Their Operating Principles

Reciprocating Compressors

Reciprocating compressors are one of the most common types of compressors used in the LNG industry. They operate on the principle of positive displacement. Inside a reciprocating compressor, there is a piston that moves back and forth within a cylinder.

The compression cycle starts with the intake stroke. As the piston moves downward, it creates a low – pressure area inside the cylinder. The LNG gas, at a lower pressure, is then drawn into the cylinder through the intake valve. Once the cylinder is filled with gas, the piston begins to move upward, which is the compression stroke. As the piston moves up, the volume of the gas inside the cylinder decreases, causing an increase in pressure according to Boyle’s Law (P1V1 = P2V2, where P is pressure and V is volume).

When the pressure inside the cylinder reaches the desired level, the discharge valve opens, and the compressed LNG gas is pushed out of the cylinder and into the discharge line. The cycle then repeats itself, with the piston moving down again for the next intake stroke.

Reciprocating compressors are known for their high efficiency at relatively low flow rates and high pressures. They are often used in applications where precise control of the compression process is required, such as in small – scale LNG production facilities or in some storage and distribution systems.

Centrifugal Compressors

Centrifugal compressors, on the other hand, operate on the principle of dynamic compression. They use a rotating impeller to accelerate the LNG gas and then convert the kinetic energy of the gas into pressure energy.

The process begins when the LNG gas enters the center, or eye, of the impeller. As the impeller rotates at a high speed, it imparts a high velocity to the gas. The gas is then forced to move radially outward from the impeller into a diffuser. In the diffuser, the cross – sectional area gradually increases, which causes the velocity of the gas to decrease. According to Bernoulli’s principle, as the velocity of the gas decreases, its pressure increases.

Centrifugal compressors are well – suited for high – flow rate applications. They are commonly used in large – scale LNG liquefaction plants, where large volumes of gas need to be compressed quickly and efficiently. They can handle a wide range of flow rates and are often more compact and require less maintenance compared to reciprocating compressors.

Screw Compressors

Screw compressors are another type of positive – displacement compressor used in the LNG industry. They consist of two intermeshing helical rotors (screws) inside a housing.

As the rotors rotate, the LNG gas is trapped in the spaces between the rotors and the housing. As the rotors continue to turn, the volume of these spaces decreases, compressing the gas. Similar to reciprocating compressors, the compressed gas is then discharged through an outlet port when the pressure reaches the desired level.

Screw compressors are known for their smooth operation, high reliability, and relatively low noise levels. They are often used in medium – sized LNG applications, such as in some small – to – medium – scale storage and regasification terminals.

Key Components and Their Functions

Regardless of the type of LNG compressor, there are several key components that play important roles in the compression process.

Valves: In reciprocating compressors, intake and discharge valves are crucial for controlling the flow of gas into and out of the cylinder. These valves are designed to open and close at the appropriate times during the compression cycle to ensure efficient operation. In centrifugal and screw compressors, other types of valves may be used for flow control, pressure regulation, and safety purposes.

Bearings: Bearings support the rotating parts of the compressor, such as the impeller in a centrifugal compressor or the rotors in a screw compressor. They reduce friction and allow the components to rotate smoothly, ensuring the long – term reliability and efficiency of the compressor.

Seals: Seals are used to prevent the leakage of LNG gas from the compressor. In LNG applications, where the gas is at a very low temperature and high pressure, high – quality seals are essential to maintain safety and prevent environmental contamination.

Cooling Systems: Compression of gas generates heat. To prevent overheating and ensure the efficient operation of the compressor, cooling systems are used. These can include air – cooled or water – cooled heat exchangers that remove the heat generated during the compression process.

Importance of LNG Compressors in the LNG Supply Chain

LNG compressors are integral to every stage of the LNG supply chain. At the liquefaction plant, they are used to compress the natural gas before it is cooled and liquefied. This helps to increase the efficiency of the liquefaction process and ensures that the gas can be processed in large volumes.

During transportation, compressors are used to maintain the pressure of the LNG in storage tanks and on tankers. This prevents the gas from boiling off and helps to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of the LNG to its destination.

At the receiving terminals and distribution points, compressors are used to increase the pressure of the regasified LNG so that it can be injected into pipelines and distributed to end – users, such as power plants, industrial facilities, and residential consumers.
